Kevin MacDonald said his office was his truck, he ran 6 different construction related companies.  He worked long hours and his health suffered. “I never kept in shape or nothing,” he said.  He weighed 350lbs, took multiple prescriptions, including 10 insulin shots per day for diabetes, he used a sleep apnea machine and his kidney function wasn’t great. Doctors were looking at dialysis soon. “I was sick all the time,” MacDonald said. Last year when he had a second stroke Kevin MacDonald decided it was time to change.  His right side was paralyzed. “I was screwed, near dead, I wanted to walk again,” he said. MacDonald said he started his workouts with Kurt McCormack from a bed in his living room. “I couldn’t even roll over,” he said. After about a year of working with Kurt McCormack, 59-year old MacDonald has turned his life around. He’s lost 110 pounds, just as many inches and has learned to walk again with the help of canes. “Kurt has got me doing a lot more walking now,” he said.  MacDonald no longer needs his sleep apnea machine, or his insulin. “It’s unreal how a change in your diet and exercise can reverse diabetes,” he said. Most of his medications are gone now too.  He works out about 5 days a week doing a home work out program with Kurt as well as eating a diet low in carbs and high in protein.   “It gave me my life back, it’s getting better all the time,” he said. MacDonald said many people don’t recognize him. HIs advice to others: “Just get at it, get it done, It’s worth it.”

The workouts are always challenging but fun. They have helped me achieve increased strenght and endurance but I have never been sore after a "Kurt" workout!

What I like best about Kurt's program is working in a group setting while doing my own individual program. I love to watch others reach new milestones and everyone is always so supportive and encouraging. Kurt makes a point of calling us all by name so we all get to know each other. It has become a fitness family and when someone doesn't show up you notice and miss them.
I remember being the newbie and thinking I could never lift weights or reach higher fitness levels. I try to make a point of letting new members know that if I can do it they can too!  My advice to anyone worried about joining....once you start you will wonder why you didn't join earlier. I am so glad I joined. I have more energy and feel so much better!

I had been putting off exercising and eating better for quite awhile and finally reached the point that I had to do something to gain strength, feel better, both physically and mentally and lose weight.  I was having lower back and hip pain daily and I knew it was time to do something.

When I started with Kurt in October of 2017 I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would I be able to do the exercises?  Yes, I could do the exercises!  Kurt was with me every step of the way.  I never thought I would be able to work out for an hour and feel so good after.  Kurt always gave me exercises that I could do…yes, they were challenging but I did them and have gradually increased the weights and repetitions.  Would I be able to stop eating junk food and make healthier food choices?  Yes, I could make healthier food choices…it was a struggle at first but I was and am still determined!

Because Kurt tailored the exercises to me, I started noticing my back and hip pain subside after the first two weeks.  After four weeks I could really notice a significant change in my body shape.  After three months of working with Kurt I feel amazing!  I have more energy, I’m sleeping better, I feel better mentally and I have an exercise routine that works for me.

I have tried to lose weight and eat healthy over the years but always seemed to struggle and not reach my goals. 

This January I started again with my same New Years resolution to get in shape and be healthy.

After the first month I was not getting anywhere, even gaining weight and felt so frustrated.

I started with Kurt on February 1 and after only two weeks I already feel more energetic and stronger.

I even feel a difference with how my clothes are fitting.

I am finally motivated to keep going as I can see that this program is working for me.

Lynn MacVicar can now run up several flights of stairs and says with laughter in voice, "When the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm ready, because I can go for a long time, they're going to have a hard time stopping me!" A few years ago it was a much different story, she had trouble walking up stairs and was making plans to move her bedroom to the main level because she was in pain just moving around. Her knees ached and she had very little quality of life--she weighed 350lbs. She says she felt miserable.  MacVicar vowed to make a change when she was on the surgery table about four years ago for a hysterectomy operation to deal with fibroid tumours. (a condition she says can worsen with obesity)   "I had this realization, I'm sitting here using medical resources and asked what have I been doing to take care of myself?"  MacVicar says she was in a constant cycle of overeating and had told herself she didn't want to be a "a gym person."  

In 2017 she reached out to Kurt. She says "meeting Kurt of Protrim was huge". "His cues, he just seems to know what weight will challenge you and says just what it takes to motivate you, without being over the top." She says Kurts motivation and the support of the group at the gym has helped turn her life around.  She now goes to the gym 5 days a week and has lost about 140lbs!!!  She says some people don't even recognize her.  She also says it's more than extra weight she's shed...she's lost those feelings of self doubt.  "It's just very freeing to feel comfortable, when I carried a lot of weight I shut a lot of things out - you kind of get your guard up," she says.  "I'm happy to have found it, and I'll continue with it, I know that!"  Lynn MacVicar says she's done lots of self reflection about her responsibility towards her own health. Her advice to others: "just keep going, put one foot in front of the other and ask yourself what are the best decisions you can make today" She says she wished she had done it sooner, but she's doing it now.  She wanted to share her story because it was seeing Louise Campbell's story on Protrim's facebook page which motivated her originally.  "If it helps one person finds their way, I'm okay with it."

In 2016, I finally decided I needed to take better control of my physical self.

I had been diagnosed with bone cancer (Chordoma) in 2010, and had the tumour resected from my spine that same year. During the surgery my left fibula was used along with surgical screws to rebuild my spine. Since my surgery, I’ve been dealing with pain, nerve damage, foot drop, exhaustion and limited mobility. I see Corena Hughes regularly for Physio to help with all of the above. (For me she is amazing in her own right too!)

By the summer of 2016, however, I had gained enough that I was more sore and less mobile. My friend Louise Campbell had told me about her experience with Kurt at Protrim. She had been working out with him for a bit and I thought maybe I should too. I went into the Spa and chatted with Kurt for a bit, I nervously explained my history and told him of my hope to lose weight, and to gain strength. He set out a plan to help with exercise and nutrition. I started the very next day, and have definitely seen changes in my strength and weight.

Being a part of the Protrim family though is the best benefit. Kurt is positive. He is pleasant and he cares about his clients. He is careful to adapt exercises for me, but also knows when to push my limits. I had been so scared to move, so protective of my sore areas, that I had stopped exerting myself and was always cautious to protect my surgical sites. I am also benefitting emotionally and socially from the Protrim family. It’s really nice to have a new group of people who look out for each other and who motivate each other on a daily basis. It’s good for my heart and my brain.
